Ghana Commemorates World Glaucoma Week in Style

Who would ever think that traffic jams provide an opportunity to fight blindness due to glaucoma? In Ghana, however, this was the case in commemorating the World Glaucoma Week (WGW) 2022.

The Ghana Optometric Association embarked on a massive street campaign to share customised silicon wrist bands with relevant Glaucoma public education quotes and information, to the motoring public in Ghana during peak traffic hours.

"This strategy was adopted since it gave us a big sample space," said Dr. Remi Ninkpe the President of Ghana Optometric Association. "Motorists stuck in traffic were our main focus in disseminating the glaucoma information", he added.

A total of 20,000 customised silicone wrist bands were distributed all across Ghana at selected traffic intersections. This was done in line with this year's WGW and as part of the Ghana Optometric Association's broader ambition of public education on relevant eye conditions.

The wrist bands distribution took place on Friday 11th March 2022 from 6 am to 9 am, in all 16 political regions of Ghana.

World Glaucoma Week (WGW), the second week of March each year is dedicated to the general sensitisation of Glaucoma all around the world.
